Inside Out 2 updates have been rolling in since Pixar announced a release date as well as some early cast and plot details. 2015's Inside Out is told through the anthropomorphized emotions of an adolescent girl named Riley (Kaitlyn Dias). Her emotions each have their own personalities but work together to ensure Riley is a well-rounded kid. Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and Joy (Amy Poehler) personify Riley’s emotional state and guide her as she grows up.

The plot of Inside Out bucks the usual Pixar formula and presents a film without a villain. Joy is both the protagonist and her own enemy as she goes on a journey to understand that suppressing “bad” emotions is unhealthy. It’s a nuanced take on healthy feelings and paints an accurate picture of what maturing can feel like. Inside Out was universally praised with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination and Best Animated Film win at the 88th Academy Awards. A Final Trailer Is Revealed

With the release date for the highly-anticipated Pixar sequel just around the corner, the latest news comes as the final trailer for Inside Out 2 is revealed. The newest tease features a new emotion not seen in the previous trailers, Nostalgia, while also returning to the inner worlds of Riley's mom and dad. The trailer also highlights the way that Riley represses her emotions, and it manifests by literally bottling up various characters like Fear and Sadness.

The Emotional Rollercoaster Returns In June

At Disney’s D23 Expo 2022, the Disney execs also announced a number of release dates for films including Inside Out 2. Inside Out 2 was given a release date of June 14, 2024, almost exactly nine years after the original. Inside Out 2 will be the 28th Disney/Pixar feature film since the studio made the world's first all-CGI animated film, Toy Story, in 1995.

The New & Returning Voices Of Inside Out 2

As the lead emotion, Joy, Amy Poehler will be returning for the cast of Inside Out 2. In fact, she took to the stage alongside Docter at D23 for the sequel's announcement. Other original emotion voice actors that are confirmed to return are Lewis Black as Anger, and Phyllis Smith as Sadness. In Inside Out, Mindy Kaling voiced Disgust and Bill Hader played Fear, but the roles have been recast in the sequel and will now be played by Liza Lapira and Tony Hale, respectively.

The new emotions introduced in Inside Out 2 represent a star-studded new ensemble, with Stranger Things alum Maya Hawke appearing as Riley's new emotional ringleader, Anxiety. She is joined by The Bear's Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui, and Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment.

Inside Out 2 Story Details

New Emotions Take Control

As any proper sequel should, the story of Inside Out 2 will build upon the ideas established in the first. After finding equilibrium within Riley's emotional sphere in the last movie, Joy and the rest of her team are completely thrown off guard by the arrival of a host of new emotions. Riley's journey into her teen years brings about sweeping changes in her emotional core as Anxiety, Ennui, Envy, and Embarrassment usurp her classic emotions.

Inside Out 2's first teaser trailer dropped on November 9th, 2023, and though it was only a snippet, it was quite revealing. Drawing on the nostalgia for the first movie, the teaser reintroduced Riley and her standard emotions, before turning everything on its ear by introducing even more. The trailer also introduced Maya Hawke's Anxiety character and offered brief pieces of dialogue from the recently recast roles of Disgust and Fear.

In March 2024, a full trailer for Inside Out 2 was released which finally introduced many of the new emotions that were only hinted at in the teaser. Along with Anxiety, who was introduced previously, the trailer reveals Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment to Riley's emotional pantheon. What's more, Joy and the rest of her original emotional team find themselves suppressed and pushed aside as the more chaotic emotions of Riley's teenage years attempt to take control.

In preparation for the movie's June 2024 release date, Pixar released a final trailer for Inside Out 2 that offers more subtle hints about the movie. Underscored by intercuts between Riley's dad and mom's emotions, the trailer also introduces a new emotion for the teenager, Nostalgia. It also reveals exactly how Riley bottles up her emotions and it manifests by several of her classic emotions being put into literal bottles.
