How can I stop Microsoft Edge from automatically opening new tabs with unwanted websites when I click on a link? It's frustrating to have to close the unwanted tab and navigate back to the original one. Is there a setting or extension that can stop this behavior?

Suggested solution does NOT WORK per SOP with anything Microsoft develops and sticks on our equipment as endless nuisances such as BING, just one of the many MSoft cancers on our computers that can't be healed.

You are all right ... NOTHING WORKS .... what was worse was redirected to sight that scammed me out of 23,000 dollars .... site pretended to be Microsoft Security warning me of a serious hack attack on my computer. Brilliantly done. FBI has said that this scam yielded over 540 million dollars in just 5 months. I think we should see if a class action suit can be organized to recapture our losses from Microsoft. Thoughts on the matter, anyone???

Oh, and those were only of people who filed a report with the FBI. They say a vast majority of people do not file with them.

I am having the same problem. Pop ups and re-directs are "blocked" but I am re-directed everytime. Is it a virus?

This just started happening to me as well. When I click a link on a web page, occasionally some random website opens in a new tab, and Edge shifts focus to that tab. Then I have to close that tab and navigate back to the tab with the link I originally requested.

Pop-up blocker in MS Edge is on. Malware and virus scans (Malware Bytes & MS Defender) all negative. I have cleared all browsing data including site permissions and passwords; and reset MS Edge. Problem still persists and has propagated to all laptops & PCs with my Microsoft account. Very frustrating - considering switching to Chrome.

To prevent unwanted redirects in Microsoft Edge, you can follow the steps below:

    1. Click on the three dots icon located at the top right corner of the browser.
    2. Select Settings. Now click on Menu.
    3. Scroll down to the Cookies and Site permissions , click on it.
    4. Click on Pop-ups and redirects.
    5. Toggle the Block switch to the On position.

This should prevent unwanted redirects from occurring in Microsoft Edge.

It appears this solution only works for specific sites that have been previously visited. What I need is a solution that works for all sites whether I have visited them previously or not.

Pop-ups and redirects are blocked but the problem continues, pressing a menu item in a website I am on takes me to a new tab where a company is advertising. I have to close that tab and go back to the original website. This is happening many times per day. Is it a virus?
