Easy Homemade Dressing Recipe: Perfect Holiday Side Dish (2024)

My family has always loved homemade dressing recipe like this one. It’s something that we hardly ever have leftovers of. That’s why I love how easy this homemade stuffing recipe is, and the fact that it makes enough for up to six or seven people. (or a family of five that really loves stuffing)

It takes a little bit of prep work or this tasty dish, but trust me that little extra effort is worth every bite. Plus how hard is it to cut up bread and leave it out overnight. (Heck, my kids leave bread out all the time. So it must be pretty easy) This is even a fun dish to get the kids involved in the Thanksgiving cooking.

What’s the difference between dressing and stuffing?

Is it soda or is it pop? What’s the difference between dressing and stuffing is kind of along the lines of that question. Over the course of my life, I’ve lived in a LOT of places.

When I lived in with my family down south (Georgia to be exact) a lot of my family members referred to it as dressing. Somewhere along the way, I learned to call it homemade stuffing. Maybe it was all those years that I was being a lazy butt and using Stove Top Stuffing because mama had little kids and didn’t have the energy to make more.

If you want to get fancy, I guess the TECHNICAL difference between dressing and stuffing is that stuffing goes in the bird. When you cooke dressing from scratch, you usually use a separate pan to bake it in. Don’t know about you, but all I care about is feeding it to my pie hole hahaha. Not whether I call it by the right name.

How to Cook This Easy Dressing Recipe: Quick Q&As

Do you have to use french bread loaves? Nope, no way. You can even cheat a little (which I highly recommend) and buy some pre-made bread crumbs for stuffing. This will save you the time of cutting up the bread and letting it sit out the night before. I love this cheat when I forgot to pull the bread out or just really don’t feel like spending my life cubing up bread.

Do you have to use celery, onion, (insert vegetable here)? Nope. The one thing I love about our recipes here at Quirky Inspired is that you can customize them to your tastes. If you can’t stand celery, leave it out! If you LOVE celery add more in. The celery is just added to give the homemade stuffing a little extra texture.

Is this recipe gluten free? As it is written, this recipe is NOT gluten free. Swap out the following ingredients to make your own gluten free stuffing recipe:

Is this recipe dairy free? Nope, but when we make it at our house as a dairy free stuffing recipe. Here are a few ingredients to make it dairy free:
